It is important to realize that hair follows a specific growth cycle, moving from an "active" stage into a dormant period. The length of each phase in this cycle varies depending upon where the hair is located on the body.

It is during the active growth phase when the hair is attached to the source of hair production, the papilla, that laser treatments are applied. The great precision of the laser permits the esthetician to destroy both the hair and the papilla during the growth phase. The laser beam itself is absorbed by the high concentration of melanin contained in the hair, without affecting the other elements of the skin. With the exception of white and grey hairs that are not receptive to laser because they do not contain melanin, laser treatment is generally effective and rapid. Multiple hairs are treated at one time (electrolysis by comparison treats only one hair at a time), there is no pain and there are no undesirable secondary effects on surrounding skin.

Both men and women may be candidates for laser procedures.

Common areas that may be treated include cheeks, ears, buttocks, nose, neck, upper lip, forehead, toes, nostrils, underarms, arms, chest and breast, legs, back and shoulder, chin, bikini line and abdomen.

During the initial session, the laser removes visible hair and disables those follicles that are in the growth phase. Follicles lying dormant during initial sessions will be unaffected, but as these follicles become active and enter the growth phase laser treatment can be successfully applied and hair eradicated. The number of sessions required varies according to the individual.
