Laser Hair Removal at The Spa
Imagine having smooth, hair-free skin without shaving, waxing, plucking, or bleaching!

Until recently, shaving, plucking, waxing, and electrolysis were the only methods of removing unwanted hair. In the early 1990’s, the first reports of using laser energy to selectively damage and disable actively growing hair follicles were published, and since the mid 1990’s, laser hair removal has become the “Gold Standard” for the management of unwanted hair.

Using the latest laser technology, the GentleLase, we offer safe, fast, effective treatments for both men and women.

Laser hair removal is fast, effective and permanent.

So what is the GentleLase laser and why is it a safe treatment?
The GentleLase is a sophisticated and safe skin care laser produced by Candela who are one of the largest manufactures of medical lasers in the world. These lasers are revolutionary long-pulse high energy alexandrite lasers, which emit a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed. At the hair follicle, laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the follicle leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

The alexandrite laser produces reddish light just at the limit of visibility at 755nm. With its large (up to 18mm) spot size and high repetition rate, the GentleLase laser is a very sophisticated hair removal laser, and is suitable for rapid treatment of large body areas in clients with light to olive complexion.

The system safely and permanently removes unwanted active body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin.

Is there a guarantee that Laser hair removal will work?
Laser permanent hair reduction works extremely well 95% of the time in almost all individuals. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee it will work for everyone. Laser Hair Removal works best in lighter skinned, darker haired clients. Because the target chromophore in hair follicles is melanin pigment, less laser energy is absorbed by the skin and more by the hair follicle.

Tanned skin also “robs” laser energy as it passes through the skin to the hair follicle. Because the pigment in the hair is the target for the laser energy, gray or white hair (which lacks pigment) cannot be effectively treated with any laser or light-based device.

What conditions are treated with laser?
Traditional hair removal techniques such as shaving, plucking and waxing, provide only temporary relief. Scarring, allergic reactions and ingrown hairs are common side effects of all these hair removal methods. Until recently, the only permanent way to remove hair has been by electrolysis - which can be time-consuming, so is usually limited to small cosmetic areas. Laser treatment quickly and safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than 20 minutes, legs and larger areas can take longer.

How many treatments will I need?
Hair grows in cycles and the laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycles at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all the active follicles in a given area. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin color and coarseness of the hair, as well as the number of hairs growing in the area at the time of the treatment. Most clients will need between 3 to 6 treatment sessions for complete removal depending on the area being treated. We will schedule your treatment sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the Laser treatment.
The skin in the area to be treated should be un-tanned and free of cosmetics as these can absorb the laser energy and increase the chances of redness, discoloration, or even blistering. Do not wax or pluck the hair for about three weeks before treatment, although the area may be shaved. The area to be treated will be shaved by the therapist immediately before treatment.

What about skin aftercare?
Some clients may experience some redness in the treated area, which rarely will last more than a couple of hours. For the two weeks following treatment, you should avoid tanning and if you go out in the sun, you should use a sunblock cream of 35 SPF. If the treatment site feels sore, you can use a gentle soothing cream. Be careful however not to rub the area. Moisturising lotions and make-up may be applied the following day.

What can I expect during the treatment?
The area will be cleaned and a touch up shave will be done if there is still hair visible. You will be asked to sign a consent. Photos may be taken. As the treatment begins you may notice a distinguishable aroma of lasered hair. This is a good sign and the smell will not hurt you. The skin will be cleaned frequently. A gel or cloths will be applied after your skin treatment.

Does the treatment hurt?
No treatment to remove unwanted hair is completely painless. The skin is protected during treatment by a Dynamic Cooling Device where cryogen is sprayed onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing clients with increased comfort. The darker the hair the more the client may feel the pulse of the laser. Clients that have previously waxed or had electrolysis usually find the treatments more tolerable. Most people describe the sensation as tingling or slight stinging. The first treatment is usually the most uncomfortable.

What if I’m Pregnant?
Although there is no scientific evidence of injury to the fetus or infant, and no reports of such injury despite millions of laser treatments, we believe Laser Hair Removal should be deferred in women who are pregnant or nursing.

Why should I have laser treatment?
This is a highly effective procedure to remove unwanted hair in a short period of time. A variety of factors can influence the treatment process. It is recommended that individuals first meet with a hair removal expert for evaluation and to discuss the best process to deal with their own skin and hair type.
